Das Eintrittsdatum bestimmter Phasen in der Pflanzenentwicklung (Phänologie) verschiebt sich über die Jahre unter anderem in Abhängigkeit von Temperaturveränderungen. Aus langjährigen Beobachtungen kann damit der Einfluss veränderter klimatischer Bedingungen auf die Entwicklung von Pflanzen und Ökosystemen ermittelt werden. Anders als direkte Temperaturmessungen spiegelt die Phänologie also eine Reaktion der Natur auf ihre Umwelt wider. Daher ist sie ein wichtiger und besonders sensitiver Bioindikator für den Klimawandel. Als Indikator wird der Blattaustrieb sowie die Länge der Vegetationsphase der Buche und der Eiche verwendet. Als Vegetationsphase ist dabei die Zeitspanne zwischen dem Blattaustrieb und der Blattverfärbung definiert. Sie wird wie folgt berechnet: Kalendertag Blattverfärbung minus Kalendertag Blattaustrieb. Dargestellt werden Blattaustrieb als Tag im Jahr und die Vegetationsphase als Anzahl Tage pro Jahr. Die Daten werden auf sechs (Buche) bzw. acht (Eiche) Flächen des intensiven forstlichen Umweltmonitorings in Nordrhein-Westfalen (ForUm NRW) jährlich seit 2001 visuell im Gelände erhoben. Pro Untersuchungsbestand werden Daten an 20 bis 50 Waldbäumen erhoben. Die Buche wird am Niederrhein, im Ruhrgebiet, im Eggegebirge, im Sauerland und in der Nordeifel beobachtet. Die Eiche wird am Niederrhein, im Münsterland, im Sauerland und in der Nordeifel beobachtet. Die Daten der Flächen werden gemittelt.
